School sponsorships

Coker Village – Education through school sponsorships and projects
Only through a school education can our children in Coker Village take their future into their own hands. But in Nigeria only 60 % of children attend primary school. That‘s why Adesuwa focuses on education, enabling:

• School sponsorhips currently for 70 children who would normally not be able to attend school. Adesuwa sponsors provide school uniforms and sandals, school material and fees, local school taxes and insurance contributions.

• Project days on educational and social topics for over 400 children from the whole village. Topics include “Learning English with the Memory game“, “Eat healthy – feel healthy“, “My hygienic home “. These topics are further covered in school classes with material supplied by Adesuwa.

• Regular two-day visits to Coker Village by our social worker Esther who cultivates close contacts with children, parents and teachers to ensure that our children are making progress in school and inform us and the sponsors about issues and special problems our children may be facing.

• In many cases Adesuwa initiates measures to offer help above and beyond our educational activities.

English Tutor Program

Coker Village – Further development through the English Tutor Program
When asked about the biggest challenge for our kids, the parents were unanimous: the English language is the biggest challenge.

Although the lessons are primarily conducted in the regional language, the aptitude test for secondary school is in English. Because of this hurdle, only half of children who attend primary school continue with their education.

In 2018 we therefore developed a Tutor Program for our schools and the success speaks for itself. With this support all of our children succeeded in passing the entrance test for secondary school!

Now we have more children in secondary school than in primary school. In 2022 we will have our first group of Adesuwa secondary school graduates!

How does the Tutor Program work?

Every school receives two tutors, one for the secondary and one for the primary children. Each learning group meets 2 – 3 times a week.

The primary pupils learn basic English to prepare them for final exams and the aptitude test at the end of the fifth grade. Secondary school children learn advanced English to prepare them for life after school.

Lesson attendance and contents are monitored by monthly tutor reports and Parents‘ Committee members.

Clean Water

Clean Water for Coker Village
Only healthy children can go to school. Unfortunately the health of our children in Coker Village was negatively affected by contaminated drinking water.

The families get the water they use for drinking and washing from the nearby river – the same river in which they bathe, wash their clothes and dispose of waste. Our children often became ill after drinking the water infested with bacteria and other residue.

That‘s why we initiated the project “Clean Water for Coker“ in 2016. To clean water quickly, easily and effectively, we supply all our families with “Aquatabs“. The families can treat a whole bucket of water with one tablet, which eliminates bacteria and residue. At Easter in 2016 the families received trainings in the use of “Aquatabs“, a bucket for use at home and an initial supply of “Aquatabs“. They can now use the water for drinking, in the household and for hygienic uses.

The impact was overwhelming!
60 % fewer cases of illnesses!
95 % of the children are worm-free! Over 90 % of the children attend school regularly!

Clean Water for Coker Village – sustainably
Aquatabs have impacted the health and vitality of the children and their families in such a positive way that we decided to search for a sustainable solution for drinkable water.

In 2018 we carried out test drilling on various sites in Coker Village which determined that borehole drilling in Coker Village is feasible and sustainable.

We approached the Rotary Club Anthony-Huette in Oberhausen and the Rotary Club of Lagos to realize our vision of clean water for Coker. Together we carried out a community assessment with 150 stakeholders which confirmed that clean water is the top priority for the Coker villagers. In February 2020 the Rotary Club of Lagos initiated a test drilling and water analysis which confirmed the feasibility of 10 locations for boreholes.

Due to Covid work progressed slowly, but…

Drilling began in 2022 and all 10 boreholes started operation in January 2023!

In January Adesuwa Chairwoman Jennifer Westholt initiated a training program to sensitize villagers on why and how to use the boreholes.

Markus Löhndorf from the Rotary Club Anthony-Huette worked with the Coker Village Oneness Association – who are now the owners responsible for operation and maintenance – to develop a business plan.

Together the measures are designed to ensure a long-term sustainable borehole operation.

20,000 Coker Villagers now have sustainable access to clean water!

treats our children‘s illnesses and gives preventative care (e.g. de-worming).
• supplies of “Medipacs“ containing basic medicine and health-care products
• project days for the whole village, including parents and children.
• our special project day “Medical Outreach“ at Easter 2019 whereby

– 8 doctors and nurses carried out general medical examinations for 100 village children

– The children were tested for blood pressure, worms, diabetes and HIV infections

Winning with bridges
in Nigeria and Germany

Activities in Nigeria – fast and flexible solutions

With their yearly visits to Coker Village our Adesuwa members in Germany aim to build bridges to Nigeria. They gain personal insights into our children‘s situations and talk personally with the children and their parents. Adesuwa is there!

Esther und Tobi visit our children regularly and inform us quickly if an emergency has arisen. Adesuwa helps!

  • In 2015 one of our children lost his mother. Because he had to support the family on the farm, his school attendance was endangered. To support the family financially an Adesuwa member sponsored a tailoring apprenticeship for his older sister, so that she could generate an income for the family and the boy could continue his schooling.
  • In 2016 Nigeria endured an economic crisis and our children were starting to suffer from hunger and malnutrition . Adesuwa organized food packages for the duration of the crisis.
  • In 2020 the Corona measures led to disastrous consequences for our families. They suffered from harder working conditions under the lockdown, lacking support from the state and skyrocketing prices for food, other articles and transport. During the 8-month lockdown we supported our families with food packages of rice, salt, palm oil, and tomato paste. All products (except rice) were purchased from local farmers and traders to boost the local economy. The action was financed by a special donation campaign.
  • In 2021 Adesuwa supplied our families with mosquito nets to help in the fight against malaria. And much more …
